Wolfgang Tillmans (born 1968) exhibited at Louisiana in 2003. Since 2008, forests have been an important motif in his photographic work – more precisely, the transition from forest to field, and the fundamental experience of the dividing line between something open and something closed. Art-historically, he is treading old, German paths. Tillmans’ treatment of this motif – a dark tangle of threads and gaps – recalls the German Danube School of landscape painting flourishing between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the region between northern Europe and Europe just south of the Alps.
